Mental illness indirectly affects all Canadians at some time through a family member, friend or colleague. Did you know that suicide is one of the leading causes of death in both men and women from adolescence to middle age?
* 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. * Of those who require mental health services, only 20% will have access to it. *Surpassed only by injuries, mental disorders in youth are ranked as the second highest hospital care expenditure in Canada. *The economic cost of mental illnesses in Canada for the health care system is over $7.9 billion. *An additional $6.3 billion is spent on uninsured mental health services and time off work for depression and distress that was not treated by the health care system due to a lack of resources and funds. With the help of organizations such as the Canadian Mental Health Association, the goal of this charity golf tournament is to raise awareness, as we as to provide the much needed funds to increase the services available for those suffering with mental illness and their families. Thanks to our donations of the over the past few years (including the $16,000 we raised last year), we have been able to help CMHA provide over 300 free walk-in counselling sessions to help people build healthy coping strategies and improve their wellness with no wait list or cost, as well as allowing over 150 people to attend a group to learn strategies to get well and stay well for a meaningful recovery. We can not do it alone, we need your help! |

He was the life of the party and worked hard to make sure all those around him never felt the loneliness and darkness that his mental illness made him feel. Tom made an impact on all those whose lives he touched. Sadly, he suffered from depression and anxiety, and in his 29th year lost his battle to suicide. Since then, Tom’s legacy has lived on through the lives of his family and friends. Our golf tournament is a celebration of Tom’s life and serves as a platform to help raise awareness about mental health, while trying to eliminate the stigma often attached to it. We hope to help others feel less alone and more willing to talk about their struggles, something that Tom unfortunately was not able to do. |
